This calculator estimates, it doesn't audit. Scholars are explicit that when you can't know the exact number of missed prayers, a reasonable, good-faith estimate is what's required — see SeekersGuidance on estimating the number of makeup prayers and calculating years of missed prayers, which also advise adding a small margin: extra make-ups simply count as voluntary worship.
How the count works
- A year of missed prayers is counted as 365 days, a month as 30 days.
- Each missed day owes the five obligatory prayers — Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha.
- With Witr enabled, each day owes six: the Hanafi school deems Witr operationally obligatory and requires making it up.
- The count starts from puberty; if its timing is unknown, the Hanafi position is 15 lunar years.
Why menstruation days are excluded
By consensus, a woman does not make up prayers missed during menstruation — they were never obligatory in the first place (SeekersGuidance: no qadha for prayers missed during menses; Darul Ifta Birmingham applies this directly to calculating missed prayers). A calculator that skips this exclusion can overstate a woman's debt by more than two years of prayers per decade. For the average, the Prophet ﷺ told a woman with indistinguishable bleeding to count her menses as six or seven days; the schools cap a valid period at ten days (Hanafi) or fifteen (Shafi’i).
A note on the differing opinion
The four Sunni schools hold that deliberately missed prayers must be made up. A minority position — Ibn Taymiyyah's, followed by IslamQA.info — holds they cannot be made up and call for sincere repentance and abundant voluntary prayer instead. We present the majority view because it's what the overwhelming body of scholarship — and every make-up-prayer program we know of — operates on.
Do women make up prayers missed during menstruation?
No — by scholarly consensus, prayers missed during menstruation are not made up at all. They were never owed. That's why this calculator subtracts your average period days from the total: counting them would overstate what you owe, often by years' worth of prayers.
What if I don't know exactly how many prayers I missed?
You don't need an exact number. Scholars advise making a reasonable, good-faith estimate of the period you missed, and erring slightly on the side of more — any extra make-up prayers simply count as voluntary worship.
Do I need to make up Witr too?
In the Hanafi school, Witr is operationally obligatory (wajib), so missed Witr prayers are made up as well — the calculator has a toggle for this. The other schools treat Witr as an emphasized sunnah that is not made up.
Can deliberately missed prayers be made up at all?
The majority position across the four Sunni schools is yes: deliberately missed prayers remain a debt and are made up. A minority view (notably Ibn Taymiyyah, followed by some contemporary scholars) holds that deliberately abandoned prayers cannot be made up and require sincere repentance and voluntary prayers instead. This tool follows the majority position; if this concerns you, ask a scholar you trust.
From what age do missed prayers count?
From puberty — for boys marked by its physical signs, for girls typically by the first menstruation. If neither sign is known, the Hanafi school counts from 15 lunar years (roughly 14 years 7 months on the common calendar).
